Airborne sytem to see turbulence for safer flights

Clear Air turbulence (CAT) strikes aircraft in clear skies without warning, causing up to 72 % of in-flight injuries and costing airlines billions annually. Pilots lack advance alerts, forcing sudden actions that jeopardise safety and increase operational disruptions. Currently there is no in-flight detection method deployed, leaving a critical gap in real-time turbulence awareness for commercial aviation.Founded by CEO Janis Hagelberg, Ultravionix combines lidar, wavefront sensing, and AI-driven turbulence profiling to deliver a 18 km-ahead, ~90 s warning. Backed by aviation experts and Swiss industry partners, the solution targets a global avionics market worth > $50 bn, with immediate relevance to airlines, aircraft OEMs, and safety regulators.
