Nature as Collateral in Smallholder Finance

Smallholder farmers in the Global South face a $230 billion finance gap because they lack bankable assets. Yet they sit on enormous untapped value, forest conservation, biodiversity restoration, and biochar carbon removals, that remains invisible to banks. reilo turns these nature services into bankable collateral, giving smallholder farmers access to agricultural loans while de-risking lending for financial institutions. Co-founded by Rahel Guggenbühl (sustainable finance, entrepreneurship, strategic partnerships) and Patrik Brandenberg (product, financial services, operations), reilo is live in Tanzania with 59 contracted loans and 75 farmers waitlisted, and launching its full MVP in Brazil end of 2026, targeting 140 farmers, 4,200 tCO2e removed, and $630k in cashflow loans.
