MechaGel

Adhesive photo-curable hydrogels for cartilage repair

Developed as an EPFL initiative, MechaGel addresses the challenges of traditional joint repair with an innovative, intrinsically adhesive hydrogel technology designed to treat cartilage damage. Injected via a minimally invasive, single-surgery procedure, the biocompatible, biomimetic polymeric gel fills the contour of any joint defect. It is then rapidly cured in place using blue light activation. Utilizing a dual chemical-mechanical network inspired by marine bioglues, the hydrogel achieves superior tissue integration and lateral adhesion without needing extra surface treatments. This structure prevents further joint degeneration and acts as a transient, load-bearing scaffold that naturally degrades as the patient's cells migrate to regenerate healthy cartilage.
