With approximately 400,000 patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery annually in the U.S, the procedure faces a critical complication post-operatively: implant subsidence. This port-operative complication, where the implant breaks through the vertebral endplates due to insufficient bone strength, affects 51% of patients. In our innovative approach, we use a new topology optimization method (patent pending) to design a patient-specific implant that reduces the risk of subsidence by 90% compared to currently used implants. The founding team consists of two PhD's from ETH Zurich. The potential revenue of our technology in our niche market in the US amounts to 1.73B USD, annually.
